ABOUT MY WORK
At The Patch, Gwbert
“What does this place know of me that I cannot know of myself?”
I am an artist living in the market town of Cardigan, Ceredigion. My work is about belonging and my relationship with the majestic hills, rugged coast and endlessly fascinating shoreline of West Wales.
I am driven by the Welsh term Hiraeth, which is a word without a direct English translation, but has a complex and layered meaning something akin to homesickness, longing, memory and identity.
Hiraeth is central to everything I do and I have been hugely inspired by The Long Field, by US author Pamela Petro. Her wonderful memoir has enabled me to explore what Hiraeth means to me and her evocative and atmospheric words have found their way into my paintings.
My working methods and materials are linked to how I experience the landscape. I am fascinated by shapes, unexpected colours, contrasts, layers, hidden elements and texture. I use mixed media, mainly acrylic paint and collage with oil pastels, pens and pencil. I love mark making and exploring what colour can be in relation to the landscape.
My work is about being in and moving through the Pembrokeshire and Cardiganshire landscape. It’s about my relationship with a place that is special to me. However I hope the viewer will enjoy each piece and be inspired to see their own landscape and perhaps go on their own personal journey.
