LONE WANDERINGS

Mwnt beach

This series of work is about the landscape of Ceredigion and North Pembrokeshire and has been made since I moved to Cardigan in June 2022. Through the process of working I have created my own abstracted analogue of the landscape and the pieces have been created in tandem with writings made outside.

These paintings speak of the elements of nature and the ever changing weather, sea, sky and shoreline. They are about my past, my present and my future. They are about remembering fragments of my childhood and my history. They are about immersion in the water and belonging to the land. It is a series of works about discovery and finding my place. Ultimately it is about coming home.

As I sit I try something new.

I take out Dad’s record collection catalogue note book. I find pages covered in his unique annotations, words, marks, numbers in boxes,
red highlights.

I start to make my own marks, my own notes. Just colours of the walkers and the surf boards, dots, swirls, shapes of the rocks and the moving tide.

No representation here, just reaction.

The pink of the dog walkers coat becomes a dominant mark on the page; the surfers in the grey sea become brightly coloured lines.

The act of doing it makes me happy. I have connected directly with my past, but completely in the present. I have created something that will appear sometime in the future buried within something I create, something that is mine, something that is telling my story.

The paintings have been created using acrylic paint, various mixed media and collage. Many of the collage elements have a personal significance and include pages taken from my Dads record collection cataloguing book. Some of the pictorial devices within the pictures echo marks from his notations.
