PARROG DREAMING

Down on the Parrog now

Boats, buoys, glassy stillness

I sit on my childhood rocks looking out at Morfa Head and Cat Rock

A lone dog walker on Newport Sands

I map the colours

Yellow, cobalt, sunny orange boats

Orange, green and pink buoys

Parrog life all around me, gentle and slow

A flash of memory

Dad with camera, Mum with binoculars

My place, my home, my past, my present, my future

The Parrog in Newport is my happy place. It’s where Afon Nyfer (River Nevern) flows out to the sea creating a magical beachscape.

The Parrog is an eclectic mix of mud, sand, seaweed and rock pools. On a clear day the sea is calm and glassy stretching out towards Morfa Head. In a storm you can taste the sea spray and feel the power of the crashing waves.

My passion has always been to lose myself in the detail of the shoreline, whether it was when I was 5 years old in my red spotty dress, or today in an old blue raincoat with my sketchbook. I can happily spend hours gazing into rock pools and finding washed up treasures from the sea.

This series of work is inspired by my long history of wandering and pondering at the Parrog. The paintings explore surface, texture, shapes and colours that speak to me of the place I love. They are on paper and panels created using mixed media including acrylic paint, collage and oil pastel.
