CARNINGLI CHRONICLES

Exploring Carningli

This series of work is about Carningli in the Preseli hills above Newport Bay, which I like to call ‘my’ mountain. In legend it is known as the Mountain of Angels.

It (or she) is said to be a magical place and I have a lifetime of memories sitting at the top, feeling her power and surveying the spectacular views.

I love to be amongst her stony outcrops, to listen, feel, breath and dream. There is so much to love in the landscape, but it is my connection and memories that the paintings are about.

Each piece has a title inspired by the writing of Pamela Petro from The Long Field. Her words resonate perfectly with my own feelings.

I am fascinated by the piles of stones that litter the mountain and crown her summit. This is reflected in the paintings, but the pieces are primarily about memory and connection.

The works are all on paper and I have used a variety of mixed media including acrylic paint, collage, oil pastels, pens and pencil. The colours, marks and textures are strong and impactful, but to me evoke the ever changing nature of the Preseli landscape.
